Open Positions

There are openings for graduate studies in our group, leading to a PhD. The general area of research is the design, fabrication and testing of novel silicon photonic devices for active devices, nonlinear optics and quantum photonics.

Graduate applicants should have earned a B.S. in electrical engineering or physics with undergraduate coursework on photonics. Hands-on experience in some aspect of device micro-fabrication and testing (lithography, etching, probe-station measurements, VNA measurements, quantitative imaging microscopy, AFM etc.) is highly desirable.

We have ongoing collaborations with the IBM Silicon Integrated Nanophotonics group (Yorktown Heights, NY) and the Nanofabrication Research Group, CNST, NIST (Gaithersburg, MD), supported in part by the NSF.

Prof. Mookherjea joined the UCSD faculty in July 2003. His research focuses on photonic devices and chip-scale nonlinear optics, including novel waveguide structures (slow light, metamaterials, etc.) and nanophotonics. At MIT, his research contributed to early work on remotely-pumped architectures for optical distribution networks. At Caltech, he received the Charles Wilts thesis prize, awarded for outstanding independent research in Electrical Engineering leading to a PhD. As assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering department at UCSD (2003-2008), he was appointed a Hellman Faculty Fellow (2004-2005) and has received the NSF CAREER award (2007-2012). He has been appointed Associate Professor (with tenure) effective July 2008.
